Fifty-two years after the project was first proposed, construction of the Pan Borneo Highway has finally begun. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak launched the upgrading of the existing road from Bakun Dam to the Bintulu-Miri trunk road in May 2015.
The project will be built in segments, starting from Tanjung Datu to Sematan, the 40 km stretch bringing road connectivity for the first time between the westernmost tip of Sarawak and the area represented by the Sarawak CM. This segment is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018 and is reported to be toll-free.
Working on packages WPC10 and WPC11 in Sarawak, StrongForce are carrying out the post tension works on the first stage of what’s set to be a major upgrade to the countries federal highway system linking the states of Sarawak and Sabah. Spanning over 1600km the Pan-Borneo Highway upgrade will be a four-lane dual carriageway of JKR R5 standard (100Km/Hr).
The four-lane dual carriageway will replace a two-lane single carriageway of JKR R3 standard (70Km/Hr), which can take up to 19 hours to commute. The upgrade will create a much safer and more efficient road network for the 3.74 million people who regularly commute along the coastline of the world’s third largest island.
At its peak the project will generate some 400,000 jobs for the local people while multiplying Sarawak’s economy eightfold through tourism, improved logistics and infrastructural development.
